Guardian of Ptuj's Streets
The City Tower and the bell tower of the Church of Saint George crown the skyline of Ptuj, rising 54 meters into the sky with its distinctive onion-shaped roof. Today’s appearance dates from 1603, built upon the ancient foundations of a Gothic tower from the 10th century. Initially a city guard tower, it evolved into the keeper of the clock and bells as the need to measure time grew. The tower survived numerous fires and wars that destroyed its original clock, melted its bells, and damaged its roof, yet it remained standing, proudly watching over the streets of Ptuj.
Legends and Secrets
Many stories and legends are told about the tower. One famous tale speaks of the missing clock face on the tower's northern side—according to folklore, the noblemen refused to contribute to its purchase or repair. Some also notice surprising similarities between the tower's escapement mechanism and Leonardo da Vinci's designs, though a direct connection to the Renaissance master has yet to be confirmed.
Clock and Pendulum
The City Tower's clock mechanism has measured time for over 300 years using precisely crafted gears, weights, and an authentic wooden pendulum that measures an impressive 21 meters, making it the longest functioning pendulum of its kind in the world. This mechanical system, operated without electricity, drives clock hands on three sides of the tower. Once tended daily by clockmakers, it still impresses with its reliability and technical excellence.

The Bells
Throughout the centuries, the bells of the City Tower announced important moments—from celebrations to warnings of danger.
